Tangled Up In Blue (26 August 2012)

He turned around to look at her
She was walkin’ away
Sayin' over her shoulder
So many things that I wish I could say to you
But I'm tangled up in blue

In 1984's radically rewritten version of this song, Dylan sang about the "radio blastin' the news," "masters of illusion," and other significant variations from the original. It took until August of 2012, 28 years later, for these lyrics to be revisited in full in concert. (In truth they resurfaced fleetingly on November 12, 2010 to fill in a lyrical memory lapse, which also yielded a humorous ad lib.) In addition to these lines, later in the song he added yet more creativity such as the lyric shown above, as well as the following gem.

He had a job and a pretty face
And everything seemed to fit
When he helped her out way down at the race
He just put it all down and just split
And he drifted down, down to New Orleans
Where they treated him just surely like a tramp
He nearly drowned, running up to Baton Rouge
When the weather was cold and damp
All the while he was alone
You know the past was close behind
He seemed [alone/below] deceiving
That world was so defined, except for you
We were tangled up in blue
