Tangled Up In Blue (12 Nov 2010)

She lit a burner on the stove
Then she offered me, offered me a pipe
“I thought you'd never say hello,” she said
"Well, you look like the silent type"
I said, “Yeah, yeah, what about that?"
...
...just like you
I'm tangled up in blue

This is one of those times when it is clear Dylan simply forgot the lyrics and came up with an unusual and entertaining alternative on the spot!

The dylyricus team has had heated debates about what Dylan might be trying to sing during those hard-to-decipher gaps above. Here are some possibilities: "I couldn't even think about it/ What if I'm mad at you, just like you..." or maybe "...What if I made it through, just like you..."

The original lyric from Blood on the Tracks, 1975, continues in this way after the "silent type" line:

Then she opened up a book of poems
And handed it to me
Written by an Italian poet
From the thirteenth century
And every one of them words rang true
And glowed like burnin’ coal
Pourin’ off of every page
Like it was written in my soul from me to you
Tangled up in blue
